We had a fantastic trip to Blackpool Zoo where there’s so much to see and do. It is nonetheless a manageable size, especially if you’re taking the children on your own.
On arrival we were given a timetable of talks and so we headed off to catch the sea lion show. The set-up was impressive, a lovely beach-style arena; and the talk was informative, but not too long for children.
The indoor and outdoor facilities for the primates (orangutans, monkeys, and gorillas) were full of fantastic activities. We spent ages watching them climb around. The overhead walkway around the giraffe enclosure is an impressive feature, giving a better perspective on just how tall these beautiful creatures are.
We brought our own picnic and sat on a lawn with a play area surrounded by picnic tables, perfect for a rest while they ate and ran off some steam. Lake View Café is open during the summer and serves hot and cold children’s meals, they are also happy to serve a small portion of the daily special. A café by the entrance serves toasties, sandwiches and coffee and a miniature railway runs in the holidays and at weekends.
I couldn’t wait to get to the lemur enclosure as I’d heard how funny they are but, lo and behold, they were all asleep! With full volume “move it, move it” from the boys, and some cajoling from me, we managed to wake them for a photo opportunity.
The highlight of our day was Amazonia. Naughty squirrel monkeys hide above the entrance and dive bomb unsuspecting visitors as they arrive, rooting around for leftover food and titbits. A staff member is on a never-ending mission with a water spray to keep them at bay, while kids and photo-hungry parents (myself included) encourage them closer!
Lastly we watched the bird display, another creatively-planned outdoor theatre show with lots of close shaves as owls and parrots flew low over our heads.
There are many more things to mention including a children’s farm and a dinosaur safari. Blackpool Zoo is great value, loads of fun and I would highly recommend it.
