This is a sweet little park, just an hour from Manchester. It’s perfect, in my opinion, for under fives. There are lots of animals you can stroke, touch and feed in the animal petting area. On the day we visited, my children were lucky enough to get close to a magnificent owl and delighted in being able to touch his feathers. As well as bottle feeding the lambs, you can also buy bags of food and feed other animals such as goats and pigs through chutes next to their enclosures.
After a good look at the animals, the children were ready for a run around the play area which had plenty to keep them entertained. They especially enjoyed climbing in and out of the huge piles of tractor tyres. There is also an indoor soft-play barn.
The tractor ride with the farmer, around the outskirts of the park, was a great success. Emus and alpacas trotted after us, sticking their heads in for a photo close up, they clearly know where the food comes from! If your tummy starts to rumble, head to the Hungry Horse Café which serves bacon and sausage baps and children’s meals such as chicken nuggets, fish fingers, sausages and chips. You can also bring a picnic as there are plenty of tables dotted around outside.
Finally, the icing on the cake was the Victorian-style fairground. The rides were scaled down for young children and included a ‘mini’ big wheel, an octopus with a whirlwind spin, mini jets and a hand-cranked mini-roundabout. My kids adored it.
An added dimension to Greenacres is the availability of on site camping (campers get free access to the farm). A great idea for those who want to try a family camping trip!
