Home Community Cafe is a newly opened cafe with a great concept and ethos. Based in Emmanuel Church in Didsbury, it makes use of a brilliant space in a beautiful building, opening up the doors to a wider community and not just on a Sunday. There are an army of industrious volunteers who share the same vision, they want a place where everybody feels welcome with all profits going back into the local community. It’ s in a perfect location being in the centre of the village (the only cafe with a spire!) plus there’s parking.
It’s brilliant cafe to take kids, for little ones there is a mini cafe area with kitchen and little tables to play and eat at, plus a few toys to keep them occupied. On Wednesday mornings they run a storytime at 11am. For older children there is a lego club on Thursdays and a craft club on Fridays. Both drop-in after school, so no need to book.
All the food is delicious, with gorgeous home made cakes, by local girl Clare, and a choice of two daily specials. On the menu when we went was a lovely aubergine caponata and pea and mint soup. If these don’t take your fancy then there is the Collection Plate – freshly made local bread, cheese from the Cheese Hamlet, salad, hummus and chutney. For the kids they do a very cute Little Homies lunch in a mini-muffin tray, with a choice of cheese, grapes, cherry tomatoes, cucumber, sultanas, pitta and breadsticks and to finish off a lovely little fairy cake. After school they offer cheese or beans on toast plus there’s a cereal club.
The coffee has been developed specifically for Home by Tank Coffee, a Manchester firm who deal directly with the farmers in Africa giving them a better deal. It’s a feel good factor all round as it’s great coffee, plus you can buy it by the packet to recreate at home.
There is only one downside to Home, it’s currently only open Wednesday-Friday. As things get settled and more volunteers come on board I’m sure this will change. The demand is definitely there and it’s only been open a couple of weeks.
A separate space inside the cafe is available for use by non-profit making groups. If you have a group or something you want to start then have a chat with Hannah about booking The Living Room.
If you’re in Didsbury, either visiting or live locally, go down soon, have a coffee and some cake, or even volunteer to be a Home-maker, it’s your cafe too!
