If you have children who like cars or motorbikes, then visit Oulton Park racing track in Cheshire. It makes a good family day out and is bound to be a hit with dads.
On entering the park at the main entrance, we drove to the interior of the track and parked on a grassed bank at the trackside. We were then able to unpack our binoculars, lay out a picnic rug and food and watch the racing. Formula 3 cars were soon whizzing by. As we were watching time trials, it was difficult to follow who was in the lead; but the speed and appearance of the vehicles were enthralling enough. I was also impressed by the picturesque countryside in which the circuit is set.
After watching a few different classifications of car race we decided to take a stroll. We were surprised and delighted to be able to enter the paddock and get up close with the cars, the drivers, and mechanics. We kept expecting to see Lightning McQueen drive out of Mack!
There is a large modern building in the middle of the circuit with a gift shop, toilets and baby changing, plus a self-service restaurant selling reasonably-priced meals, snacks and drinks. The results of the races are shown on a screen whilst you eat.
The Hollies Farm Shop and Café is close by to pick up tea on the way home.
Overnight camping is available at the trackside. Open on various dates of the year. Before visiting check online if there is a race event on.
Adults £13 upwards, depending on event, children free.
