This modern tearoom with a traditional twist is bang on trend and already extremely popular. Owned by Most Haunted presenter Yvette Fielding, along with Teacup proprietor Gary McLarnan, it is housed in a fabulous Victorian building opposite the Cathedral.
The decor is gorgeous with beautiful black and white floor tiles, and the whole place has an airy feel. A multitude of loose-leaf teas are lined up on the shelves; I ordered the Cream Tea at £4.90, a gigantic homemade scone with clotted cream, along with Sunshine Earl Grey tea. On its arrival I was handed a very cute egg timer, and instructions by my waiter on how to brew the tea properly. I have to admit, despite my scepticism, it was lovely and definitely ‘enlivened my senses’ as the tea menu had promised!
I was visiting with my nine-year-old and his friend and, although there is no children’s menu, the boys chose a couple of Fentiman’s ginger beers and a toasted sandwich, happily rounding it all off with chocolate brownies! Proper Tea is best suited to families with older children or mums with young babies… I just hope none of Yvette’s spooky friends come to check it out!
