When award-winning Italian San Carlo opened its chic, all day dining restaurant “Cicchetti” on the ground floor of Kendals, there wasn’t a hotter table to be had in city centre Manchester. The concept, a menu that offers a multitude of Venetian tapas-style dishes, has had appreciative diners flocking. I’ve been a few times now for lunch with girlfriends and not failed to be impressed by the attentive, warm service and first class food.
I dropped by most recently with mum, sister and eight-month-old niece. Interestingly there were several mothers in with their babies and the staff were lovely with all bambini, cooing appreciatively and putting mums at ease. The idea is to order several of the small dishes and share them amongst each other – perfect for someone like me who loves tasting lots of different things! We ordered lamb cutlets, spaghetti carbonara, beef carpaccio and a piadina, which was plenty between three of us. Atmosphere is buzzing and unpretentious – it does always seem busy and you can’t book in the daytime, so probably best to get there early for lunch. A sterling restaurant that I think deserves its reputation. I hear they do a mean old breakfast too!
