If you are looking for somewhere a little bit different, Sapporo Teppanyaki in Manchester’s Castlefield district is a great bet. We tried it with our three children aged 13, 10 and 7 early on a Saturday evening; lots of other families had had the same idea. We were seated on a horseshoe-shaped table overlooking a large metal grill, along with two other families, so don’t come here if you only like private dining! The kids’ menu is really good value – for £6.95 they can choose a main meal and a drink (pudding is an extra £2 but our kids couldn’t eat another thing!) The kids’ menu yakisoba noodles (chicken or vegetable) and the salmon teriyaki are both cooked on the grill in front of you, and so they are the most exciting options to go for. The show was almost ready to start!
First of all our Teppanyaki chef set fire to oil on the grill. The flames leapt a spectacular three feet high. The kids loved it! I over-protectively stopped them from leaning in for a closer look as I’m sure they would have regretted the singed eyebrow look! Then the chef cooked sauté potatoes. Your first three chips are served to you via the air. Yes, you are expected to catch a flying chip in your mouth. In front of your family and other strangers. This was actually not as daunting as it might sound, in fact it was very funny and everyone completely got into the swing of it. Just for the record, I managed it on my second go!
The food is really fresh, and is cooked on the grill in front of you – stir-fried vegetables, noodles, meat or fish with a variety of sauces. Our meals were absolutely delicious. And it was great fun too. Our verdict: it’s an inspired place to go for a celebratory meal. We will definitely be looking for a reason to go again.
