This is a fantastic place to come and test your once-perfectly-honed scalextric skills. After all, who isn’t a big kid at heart? Set in an old spinning mill, it’s a climb up the stairs or a test of faith in the rickety lift to this fab little gem. There’s an eight lane computerised scalextric track, some tea and coffee making facilities, a few snacks available, and that’s about it.
Julie made us feel very welcome and soon had us on the starting grid. With an electronic start system, you’re penalised if you try and jump the gun; the atmosphere soon starts to get tense. The kids were quick to figure out which car was the speediest and which lane was the easiest to race on, so desperate were they to beat their friends. There were even some professional eight-year-olds who had brought their own cars!
If you’re not racing there’s still plenty to do, as out-of-control drivers (usually the adults!) take corners far too quickly, and cars constantly fly off the track. In fact, as the competition hots up, suddenly yours is the most important job – getting the cars back on track and racing as fast as they possibly can!
Monday 6.30-8.30pm is family night and, although a bit late for our boys during term time, this is fine in the school holidays. They also run family fun days throughout the year (10am-3pm).
And for the champions at the end of an evening’s racing, there’s the chance to stand on the podium, basking in glory! Every boy racer’s dream!
