The real appeal of a trip here is not the elegant dining room of the three-storey Victorian building that houses the Slattery empire, but walking through the Willy Wonka-style shop on the ground floor!
Children cannot fail to be impressed by the rows and rows of superbly decorated cakes, gateaux, chocolates of every shape and size, sweets and bottles of sarsaparilla. Unfortunately there are no oompah-loompahs but the ‘chocolate factory’ itself can be viewed through large picture windows at the rear of the shop.
Upstairs, a children’s menu is on offer. On a recent visit my boys devoured soup served with fingers of white bread and butter for £2.25. They were delighted to find their favourite dessert, often missed off modern menus, jelly and ice cream! For Mums and Dads there are, amongst other things, sandwiches starting at £5.75, and the fabulous and famous ‘Slattery Rarebit’ which I can’t wait to go back for. Even with a full belly, it is impossible not to stop and buy in the shop on the way out.
