If you want some time to yourself, some much needed R&R, then send the man in your life to play scalextric at Stonerig Raceway with the kids. They will think you are the best mum ever! Run by enthusiast Gareth, Stonerig is a brilliant place, tucked away in an industrial unit near Oldham.
There are seven brilliantly-themed tracks: choose from landscapes such as Ice Mania, Crazy Valley or The Rocks. I particularly loved the overhead cable car in the Alpine Valley, and the attention to detail is amazing! We went on a weekday evening and were lucky to have the place to ourselves. But even if it gets busy at weekends, there are so many tracks to choose from that you shouldn’t have to wait long for a turn.
Stonerig quickly won my three boys over (aged from four to nine years), keeping them all entertained and interested for a full hour, with no arguments! The youngest even won on the 120ft pro-track. I’d like to say his older brothers let him, but I don’t think they did!
I thought the super-fast Nascar track would be their favourite, but funnily enough they loved the smaller Crazy Valley best as they kept crashing into each other, and thought this was hilarious!
Guys are on hand to help put your cars back on the tracks when you inevitably spin off; the tracks are so big, and often mountainous, it can be hard to spot where the cars have gone! There are lap counters, false start detectors and speed gauges so you can have loads of individual races or try to beat your own personal best.
