Simply driving down one of the long majestic carriageways that dissect Tatton’s 1,000 acres or so of deer parkland is guaranteed to lift your spirits. You’re instantly transported to a more elegant world, one where you might expect to find Hugh Bonneville lurking behind every tree… Obviously the kids in the back of the Golf quickly snapped me out of my favourite daydream!
Tatton Park has lots to offer for all ages – it’s got a huge playground, a working farm, a neoclassical mansion, a Tudor Old Hall, award-winning formal gardens, parkland, farm-shop, café and usually a few small fairground rides – plenty for a day trip! On our last visit, we spent the bulk of the day exploring the gardens – hiding under tree canopies, looking for the Magic Faraway Tree! We rolled down small hills, threw pennies in fountains and played hide and seek amongst the trees. Once little legs were well and truly worn out, we took lunch at the café, though usually I prefer to bring along a picnic. A beautiful old-fashioned carousel is usually running in the cobbled courtyard just by the shops and café. Inevitably it’s impossible to escape without the children having at least one ride. All of this makes Tatton a real favourite for us.
Finally, being such a large estate, Tatton plays host to a barrel-load of events throughout the year, from classical music with fireworks to country shows, right up to being the northern site for the annual RHS show, so it’s worth checking the event site.
