Too often in the modern age of the gastro pub, style rules over content, but this homely pub nestling in beautiful Cheshire countryside delivers both in an extremely accomplished way. First impressions were promising as we pulled up. The Black Swan is very pretty and the finger-post pointing one way to the boules area and another to the outside wood-burning pizza oven indicated a pub that stands out from the crowd. It’s not overly surprising, as it hales from excellent pedigree – it’s the “little brother” of The Swan in Newby Bridge up in The Lakes, which has received high accolades.
The Black Swan in Lower Withington has design elements that are fun and quirky but also retains a traditional quality, with welcoming open fires and flagstone floors. Our children feasted well off a varied menu ranging from scampi to chargrilled chicken breast (£6.50) and even jam sandwiches (£3.50). My partner and I ate french onion soup and lamb tagine, both reasonably priced. Our food was superb.
With a warm and friendly atmosphere, The Black Swan is a definite new fave!Food: Daily 10am-9pm The Black Swan, Lower Withington, Cheshire SK11 9EQ Tel: 01477 571770 blackswancheshire.com
