Opening in August 2013, on the former site of the Soap Opera laundrette overlooking a leafy children’s park, The Laundrette gives a nod to its former life. Amusingly the menu refers to the Pre Wash (starters), Easy Care (salads), Full Loads, and offers the Half Load Menu for kids. But the machines and Bella magazines are long gone and the whole place has been cleverly transformed. An outside terrace of large comfy sofas, tables and twinkling lights allow you to eat in the sun or, on chilly evenings, enjoy a hot chocolate under a blanket warmed by a heat lamp. Inside, it’s bare brick walls, low lighting and chilled soundtrack make for the coolest pizza place!
We’ve been a few times for drinks outside with friends whilst our older children have played in the park opposite, and recently we tried out the menu on a Saturday teatime with our kids. My youngest was delighted when he was presented with his own chef’s hat and ingredients to make his own pizza. My eldest, who now eats off the Full Load Menu, acknowledged that the kids’ pizza was the biggest he had seen, and would probably have been sufficient even for him. It’s not all about pizzas though, we also had some great carpaccio of beef, calamari and, for Dad, a burger complete with ‘ Bloody Mary’ ketchup. Sensational!
The Laundrette make eating out fun – they serve drinks in jam jars, make mean cocktails, source locally where possible, whilst making everything themselves, so there’s every reason to give it a go. Children are made to feel very welcome. We’ll certainly be popping back.
