One rainy Saturday afternoon, my eldest boys were playing footie and I had a few hours to spare with my youngest, Ted. A great opportunity for a little bonding time, I thought; and perfect timing to indulge in a museum together, without the big ones moaning!
The Michael Wilford designed building is beautiful – housing a theatre, drama workshops and several galleries, as well as a restaurant and coffee shop. We were here though, for the art (and possibly a quick shop in the Lowry Outlet afterwards!) Every time I come here I’m blown away by the gallery’s permanent exhibition, Lowry Favourites, an incredible selection of over 400 L.S. Lowry paintings and drawings. The artwork is set off dramatically on blood red walls. As we went in, Ted was given a laminated sheet of eight clues which we had to find in the original artworks; it really makes you look at the paintings properly. Blank postcards and pencils are dotted around so you can show off your own artistic skills: Lowry’s paintings are ideal to try and copy, with plenty of animals, trains and stick people to capture children’s interest. Ted drew a pretty impressive dog and proudly displayed it on the gallery walls.
Temporary exhibitions by contemporary artists regularly change, and are well worth checking out. Across from the gallery entrance is a brand new children’s space called The Lookout. Inspired by the fantastic views of the Quays, you can sit and draw, or play games and there’s a dedicated area for tots with plenty of toys.
Every Friday they run sessions specifically for the under fives, exploring music and dance; with a doodle workshop for budding artists. And for older age groups, drop into The Lookout on a Saturday for a free art session. There are also plenty of regular workshops which link in with the current theatre production.
