Enthusiastically recommended to us by friends, The Swan with Two Nicks in Little Bollington deserved their good praise. We dropped in recently, after a walk round National Trust’s Dunham Massey. Now, if you’re in the know, it’s actually quite easy to walk across the Dunham Massey estate to get to this pub. If, like us, you’re not; you might get back into your car, key the postcode into SatNav (the pub’s website clearly states not to do this, but I hadn’t read that bit!), and then drive aimlessly round Dunham village for 15 minutes (having a row!) before arriving at a mill on the wrong side of the river! So check the website for directions if you’re in any doubt!
My husband loved this pub from the moment we walked in. It’s traditional, characterful and totally devoid of any gastro-pub, glossy makeover that he hates, often stripping the heart out of these old inns. With its wooden beams, roaring log fire and dogs aplenty (it’s very canine-friendly), the ambience is cosy and welcoming. It was busy and we were lucky to get a table (next time I would definitely book).
The menu is good hearty fare. Hubby went for Gamekeepers Pie (£12.95). I couldn’t resist old-fashioned pub fave, scampi and chips (£10.95), and the kids chose from the under-10’s menu, pasta carbonara and a burger with chips (£5 each). The food was excellent. The Swan with Two Nicks is just how a country pub should be, a great tradition!
Food served daily Mon-Sat 12-9pm and Sun 12-8pm
