This superb ancient coaching inn, bordering the forests of mystical Alderley Edge, is a firm favourite with us. Our last visit was for an early tea – there were three families with eight kids between us – I did phone ahead first to book!
Inside this old pub, you’ll find a maze of dining rooms, tastefully designed with rather nice antique furniture. The owner took us through to a large room towards the back where other families were dining. We were made to feel really welcome, there’s no doubt that this is a very child-friendly place to come. Children can order almost anything from the adult menu, in smaller portion sizes. Our brood chose fish and chips, sausage and chips, and sticky ribs. Clean plates all round, the food is excellent here!
The Wizard also has a charming back garden, perfect for lunch on a summer’s day while the little ones run around (though it’s too close to a main road to let them wander off). We had picked a late afternoon in winter, making the most of the cosy inn. Handing over Top Trumps and colouring books from my handbag ensured we grown ups could enjoy our meals too; everyone was happy!
It’s a simple winning formula really. Run your kids ragged through the woods, fill their heads with tales of wizards and dragons, and then settle in for a hearty lunch at The Wizard!Food Mon-Fri 12-2pm & 6.30-9pm, Sat 12-9.30pm, Sun 12-7pm.
